Joline and I decided to send new Bibles for Henry and Joseph with Bob. I’d heard other prisoners at Ihungu call Henry “Hillary,” and he’d typed “Hillary” on my computer when he’d given me his cell phone number. I wanted to make sure their names were inscribed on the front of their Bibles exactly how they would want them.

On our next call, Henry explained he actually has two names—Tumusiime Henry and Tumwesige Hillary. There’d been some disagreement between Henry’s mother and father about his name, and so he’d used both over the years, which is not at all uncommon in Uganda.

When I asked him what he’d like me to call him, he responded, “I prefer Hillary, sir.” From that point forward, I’ve called him Hillary, but for ease of understanding in this book, he will remain Henry here.

What he told me next spiked my blood pressure once again.

“Yesterday two men came to Ihungu and tried to make me sign a document. They said it was called a civil judgment. They said it would give Innocent’s family money if Rose and I were found guilty.”

“You didn’t sign anything, did you?”

“No, I did not.”

“Good. Did they try to hurt you?”

“No. They just wanted me to sign.”

“Do you feel safe at Ihungu? Should I call Mr. William?”

“I am okay. Mr. William comes to Ihungu every day, and I told him about the visitors. He said they wanted him to sign papers also, but he refused too. I think I am okay here.”

While less than convinced, I took comfort in knowing Bob would be there soon.

“My friend Bob is coming to Uganda next week. He started the Restore school you and Joseph will attend once you are released. He will be there when Justice Ochan issues his ruling.”

The next day I delivered the inscribed Bibles to Bob to take with him to Uganda. But Bob only made it as far as Chicago; a volcanic eruption in Iceland halted intercontinental air travel because of the threat floating ash posed to jet engines.

After two days of waiting, Bob had no choice but to return home. The following Monday I told Henry that Bob wouldn’t be coming. He’d heard about the volcano on the radio, but hadn’t realized it affected air travel.

He told me Bo and Derrick—the other pair of brothers who’d been jointly charged with murder—had been to court that day and been instructed to return on Thursday, the day Justice Ochan was scheduled to announce Henry’s verdict. Everything was coming to a head on that day, and while Bob wouldn’t be there, Niemeyer promised he would.
